Roasted chestnuts made easy! These air fryer chestnuts turn perfectly soft, sweet, and golden in minutes, no oven needed. A cozy, festive snack everyone loves.

Roasted chestnuts are the quintessential winter treat, filling the air with their sweet, nutty aroma and evoking cozy holiday memories. Traditionally roasted over an open fire or in the oven, chestnuts can now be made even easier in your air fryer! This method gives you perfectly roasted chestnuts with tender, creamy interiors and slightly caramelized shells in a fraction of the time. No special equipment or standing over a hot stove, just score and air-fry for a delicious snack that’s naturally gluten-free, vegan, and surprisingly nutritious.

What Are Chestnuts?

raw chestnuts

Chestnuts are edible nuts from the sweet chestnut tree, known for their starchy, slightly sweet flavour and creamy texture when cooked. Unlike most nuts, chestnuts are low in fat and high in carbohydrates, making their nutritional profile similar to potatoes. Fresh chestnuts are available in fall and winter, typically from September through February, and should feel firm and heavy with shiny, smooth shells. They’re naturally gluten-free, vegan, and packed with vitamin C, fibre, and minerals.

Tips for Perfectly Roasted Chestnuts

The key to perfect roasted chestnuts is scoring them properly before cooking. This prevents them from exploding in the air fryer and makes peeling much easier. Always use fresh chestnuts that feel heavy and firm; discard any that feel light or have holes, as these may be dried out or infested. Don’t skip soaking the scored chestnuts in water for 10 minutes before air frying, as this helps steam them from the inside and keeps them moist. Peel the chestnuts while they’re still warm; they become much harder to peel once cooled, so work quickly or keep them wrapped in a towel to retain heat.

How to Score Chestnuts Safely

Scoring chestnuts is essential to prevent them from bursting during cooking. Using a sharp paring knife or chestnut knife, carefully cut an “X” shape into the flat side of each chestnut, cutting through the shell. Hold the chestnut firmly on a cutting board. The deeper and wider your score, the easier the chestnuts will be to peel after roasting, and the shell will curl back beautifully at the cuts, revealing the tender nut inside.

Ways to Use Roasted Chestnuts

Roasted chestnuts are delicious on their own, but they’re also incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Chop them into holiday stuffing, toss with roasted Brussels sprouts, or puree into soups for added creaminess. They’re wonderful in risotto, candied as marrons glacés, or made into chestnut spread. You can even grind dried roasted chestnuts into chestnut flour for gluten-free baking!
